Applicants to the Temerlin Advertising Institute have the option (but are not required) to take and submit scores from either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Submitted scores are used for statistical purposes for the program and will not be factored into an applicants candidacy.

Applicants that have taken, or plan to take either, may request their scores be sent to us:

  • GRE: from the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey directly to “Southern Methodist University”: School Code 6660, Department Code 4501 Advertising.
  • GMAT: from the Graduate Management Admissions Council to SMU in the Temerlin Advertising Institute.

Again, applicants are not required to submit these scores for consideration.

Three letters of recommendation are required. Letters of recommendation should be requested from professors who know the personal and academic qualifications of the applicant, or supervisors who can attest to the knowledge and work ethic of applicants. When completing an online application applicants will have the opportunity to arrange for letters to be delivered electronically to the reference listed. Applicants will need a valid email address for each reference and upon submission, notification will be emailed to them directly with instructions on submitting a web-recommendation form on behalf of the applicant.

All international students admitted to a graduate program are required to provide:

  • Photocopy of passport page that shows official spelling of student’s name (submitted at time of application)
  • Proof of financial support, usually in the form of a certified letter from a bank (submitted following an offer of admission)

A TOEFL score of a least 100 (minimum of 22 in each section) on the iBT or a minimum of 7.5 (minimum of 7.0 in each section) on the IETLS is required of all international applicants whose first language is not English. Before an applicant can be considered for admission into a graduate program, the applicant must request the iBT TOEFL score to be sent from the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey directly to “SMU Meadows School of the Arts”, School Code 7640, and the appropriate Department Code in the Social Sciences category: 83 Communications. Applicants completing the IETLS should request scores be sent to SMU Meadows School of the Arts. Applicants who have attended all four years and graduated from a U.S. or English-speaking university are exempt from this requirement.
